As I mentioned in Monday’s post, Jeff and I headed to Salzburg, Austria the past few days and we just got back yesterday. Salzburg is just 3 hours outside of where we live in Regensburg, and I’ve been lucky to visit a few times this hockey season. Every time I’ve gone Jeff has had practice or a game, so he has been unable to join. This time I was excited to finally be able to visit what’s become one of my favorite European cities with my wonderful husband.
Salzburg is the perfect mix of everything I love in a city. It’s small enough to see in a day, but there’s always something beautiful around every corner. The buildings in the old city are all original and have never been destroyed and rebuilt like many big European cities – as a result, Salzburg oozes with charm. Even the modern shops have an authentic, old-city feel. All of this is surrounded by the Austrian Alps which you get the occasional glimpse of as you walk through town, and not to mention a fortress above overlooks the whole city.
Jeff and I stayed at the Wolf Dietrich hotel right in town. Since Jeff wanted a more relaxing vacation, during the days we were sightseeing and our evenings were spent unwinding in the hotel’s spa. It could not have been a more perfect scenario – especially with the unexpected chilly weather. I highly recommend it if you’re in town!
I spent our days in Salzburg in my usually sightseeing attire – sneakers, comfy jeans, and a cozy tee. Truthfully I thought it would be a bit warmer outside – I was in Salzburg a week ago and temps were around 60 degrees – I was not prepared for the snowfall and 30 degree weather. I was thankful I brought my Wellensteyn coat to keep me warm.
I’d love to visit Salzburg again, maybe when it’s a bit warmer – until then I will forever be cherishing the memory of such a beautiful city.
Have you ever been to Salzburg? Does it make your travel list?
